What is Semaglutide? (also known as Ozempic®)
This is a prescription only medication (POM) which is prescribed for each individual by a licenced medical practicioner after a health assessment to assess you're eligibility for the medication.
Semaglutide mimics a natural hormone already found in your body (GLP-1). It works to reduce your appetite in three key ways:
It blocks a key hunger hormone telling your brain that you are hungry, whilst also helping to reduce leptin resistance (a hormone which can affect your metabolism & weight). This also helps stop the weight from coming straight back on when you stop the jab.
It slows down the gastric emptying process, meaning that your body takes longer to process food and it is fuller for longer. This means your body does not need as much intake as normal as it works off the food it has.
The medication helps to speed up your metabolism and increase fat burning. This promotes normal blood glucose levels, the liver metabolism of glucose and helps adipose tissue burn fat in a safe and controlled method without causing a sugar-crash. This avoids the urges for quick-fix sugary foods.
This all helps to reduce the risk of the so-called "starvation mode" and other side effects like ketoacidosis, as you will be burning off a mixture of stored carbs & fats.
Unlike fad diets which tend to starve the body when it's shouting out for food, the medication reduces your body's desire to get more food, which makes it easier to make healthier choices and to reduce calories. It also stops leptin levels from rising due to "starvation". Low leptin levels can cause increased hunger & a slower metabolism!
This means that when you stop using the medication, the body isn't desperate for sustenance and therefore, you won't suddenly begin storing fat and gain all the weight back. Ironically, it's a more natural way to lose the weight and keep it off.

FAQ
What is the mechanism of action for Ozempic®?
Ozempic® is in a class of drugs known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists (incretin mimetics).
It works by binding to GLP-1 receptors and stimulates insulin release from the pancreas when you need it. It helps to lower your blood sugar levels and A1C. It also helps to reduce the amount of sugar released by your liver and slows down food leaving your stomach to help prevent blood sugar spikes.
What is the normal dose of Ozempic?
Ozempic® is injected subcutaneously (under the skin) in the stomach area, thigh, or upper arm.
The injection is given only once a week on the same day of the week, at any time on that day. You can take Ozempic with or without food.
The recommended starting dose of Ozempic® is a 0.25 mg injection once weekly for 4 weeks. This is only a starting dose and cannot be used long-term to control your blood sugar. After 4 weeks, you go up to the 0.5 mg dose once a week for at least 4 weeks.
How much can I expect to lose?
The average weight loss per person is always different. Clinical trials for all 3 types of the medication have shown a range of weight loss between 8lbs and 19lbs.
In the latest Semaglutide (the weekly injection) study released in February 2021, 75% of participants lost 10% of their body weight.
The key is not to compare your weight loss to others but to focus on your own goals and progress.
Who would not meet the eligiability criteria?
- Under 18's or Over 75's
- Ladies who are breastfeeding or pregnant or actively trying to get pregnant.
- Anyone who has had pancreatitis or thyroid tumours
- Anyone with a history or direct family history of MEN2
- Type 1 diabetics or patients taking diabetic medication
- Renal (kidney) or liver disease
- Anyone with heart failure
Can I drink alcohol whilst on the programme?
Although alcohol does not directly interact with the medication, we do advise people to avoid alcohol if possible. Research has shown that alcohol mixed with the medication may put extra strain on your liver and it may affect your blood sugar levels. Alcohol is also empty calories and may reduce the potential achievable weight loss.
Are there potential side effects?
Like any medication, there are the risks of side effects. The most common side effects are transient - this means that they only last for a couple of days whilst your body adjusts to the medication. 40-60% of clients experience no side effects, whilst others experience one or two mild side effects.
What are the side effects?
- Nausea (This can be minimised by eating smaller portions more regularly and avoiding fatty foods)
- Indigestion
- Headaches
- Dry mouth / thirst
- Constipation or loose stool
- Tiredness
Some clients experience no side effects. Some experience one side effect. Some experience two side effects. Everyone is different and it is difficult to predict.
How long do side effects last?
Side effects last as long as the drug semaglutide remains in your body. The half-life for the Ozempic® Injection is from 4 to five weeks. Once you stop Ozempic®, your body will take about five weeks after your last dose to completely clear the semaglutide. Common side effects will last up to 5 weeks. The common side effects like nausea, constipation, gas, and bloating will still be felt even after a month, and then will drop in severity. The weight loss itself can cause feels of fatigue, and tiredness, however this will decrease over time.
Due to your stomach reducing in size you will still experience a loss of appetite until two months after the Ozempic injection course.
